According to a research study featured in the Canadian Journal of Surgery and published by the online magazine ScienceDaily.com, the likelihood of a patient surviving traumatic injuries in an emergency room is far greater when transported by helicopter. The 10-year study collected data on both ground and air emergency vehicle services at Atlanta Medical Center, Columbus Regional Hospital, the University of Calgary, and Emory University in Atlanta. Traumas from all-terrain vehicle accidents and vehicle crashes on the road were considered in the study, and the results showed an exponentially higher mortality rate in victims transported by ground ambulance services than victims transported by air.
Specifically, 43 patients died after being flown to the emergency room, while 585 deaths were recorded after patients were driven. Researchers suggest that the difference may be due to the fact that helicopters have more resources available than ambulances, such as flight nurses and paramedics, as well as advanced technology to monitor and treat patients’ conditions while in flight.
