Since 1998, Helinet Aviation owner Alan Purwin has volunteered his company’s services to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles as the primary air component of its Emergency Transport Program. In recent years, Alan Purwin also donated two helicopters to the hospital outright.
Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) established its Emergency Transport Program during the late 1980s. The following are interesting facts about the program.
1. The CHLA Emergency Transport Program includes both ground and air transport services. Air support is available for long-distance trips, while ground support is used for shorter transports. Ambulances are also employed when weather conditions keep helicopters grounded.
2. It only takes 10 minutes to dispatch a helicopter to pick up the team at CHLA.
3. The two helicopters that Helinet Aviation donated to Children’s Hospital, a Sikorsky S-76B and a Sikorsky S-76A, are solely used for the Emergency Transport Program.
4. The helicopters are flown by six experienced pilots and maintained by Helinet Aviation.
5. Up to 2,300 patients are transported to the hospital through the program annually. It is estimated that half the patients are neonatal cases.
